Gender Ministry investigates Facebook announcement putting baby up for adoption

The Ministry of Law and Gender has initiated an investigation after a woman from Laamu Maavah announced that her baby, born out of wedlock, was up for adoption.

The woman made this announcement on Facebook with a photo of the baby, and also provided a number for interested parties to contact.

Deputy Minister for Law and Gender Shidhatha Shareef told Sun Online that the case had been filed to the police, and efforts were ongoing to provide protection to the baby and the mother.

She said that it was being treated as a serious case.

Maavah Council Member Moosa Faisal, said that the announcement was made on Facebook by him following the mother’s request.

He said that the Council provided her assistance when she was taken to the hospital in labour. Faisal said that her family was poor and needed support, and that this had been informed to the Gender Ministry on several occasions.

Maavah Council further informed that the woman also has another child born outside of marriage, and several such issues related to her family have been filed to Gender Ministry.

Shidhatha said that she was not informed of any such issues, but assured that they would be investigated if they had been filed to the ministry.
