MIFCO has started taking yellow fin tuna caught by fishermen to the factory at Kanduoiygiri.
Adlee Ismail, CEO of MIFCO said on Wednesday to Sun Online that yellow fin tuna caught by fishermen everyday has been started to shipped to factory at Kanduoiyggiri after they are brought to Felivaru by charging a fee from fishermen.
“When we talked to fishermen, fuel charge to one way costs around MVR 6,000. So it is a total of MVR 12,000. We charge MVR 6,000 from fishermen which is a half of the total MVR 12,000” said Adlee.
Some fishermen have raised their concerns over charging from them without a prior notice by MIFCO.
However, Adlee said that price of yellow fin tuna varies with timings and that MIFCO has never taken a charge from fishermen after weighing fishes. He also added that since this was a new experience to MIFCO, they also have received some complaints from fishermen.
Adlee stated that at present, yellow fin tuna from three fishing boats are taken to Factory through MIFCO after weighing their fishes in Felivaru, and that MIFCO aims providing this new service to as many fishing boats as possible.
Adlee said that both fishermen and MIFCO can benefit from the newly started service and that the main purpose of taking yellow fin tuna to Kanduoiygiri was to increase the amount of fishes to MIFCO and to minimize the expenditure of fishermen on weighing their fishes.
Yellow fin tuna, unlike other fishes, can be processed only at Kanduoiygiri and yellow fin tuna must be processes on the day they are caught, said Adlee.
