Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) member Ahmed Shareef Adam, the newly elected Thimarafushi MP, has been sworn in as Member of Parliament.
The official ceremony was held at 8:30 at Parliament office, and was attended by Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim and several Members of Parliament.
Shareef was welcomed by PPM and MDP members as he joined the Parliament.
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentary Group Member and Thoddoo MP Ali Waheed welcomed Shareef on behalf of MDP, and expressed confidence that Shareef would work for the benefit of the people. He also thanked former Thimarafushi MP Mohamed Mustafa for his contribution to the Parliament and people of Maldives.
Speaker of Parliament Shahid announced that following the swearing in of Shareef, PPM has official representation in the Parliament. He noted however that the documents received by the Parliament indicate there is only one PPM member in Parliament; this will be settled according the Parliament regulations once the Parliament receives the necessary papers in this regard from PPM.
Shareef defeated former Thimarafushi MP Mohamed Mustafa with a difference of 429 votes in the Thimarafushi by-election held last Saturday. Shareef received 1,756 votes while Mustafa received 1,327 votes.
