Too soon to comment on CMAG report: Government

The government has stated that it is too soon to comment on Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG)’s statement that the Commission of National Inquiry established to investigate the events leading to the transfer of power on 7 February 2012, is not independent.

Government Spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza said in an interview with Sun Online today that the government will comment on CMAG’s statement after conducting a study into it. Also, the government is currently making the necessary preparations for Palestinian President Mahmood Abbas’s visit to Maldives today.

He noted the likelihood of the issue of CMAG’s report being brought up at the press conference to be held today by President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik and Palestinian President Mahmood Abbas.

“Right now we are focusing on Palestinian President’s visit. The government has no comment on that issue, not yet,” Riza said.

CMAG had stated in its report issued yesterday, “The Commission of National Inquiry, established to assess the events leading to the transfer of power on 7 February 2012, is not independent or impartial, and has failed to gain sufficient support in Maldives. Ministers urged the Government to review immediately the composition and terms of reference of the Commission to make it genuinely independent, credible and impartial.”
