Parliament approves amendment to exempt Maldivians from TGST

The parliament has passed an amendment bill to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act, to exempt Maldivians from the Tourism Goods and Services Tax (TGST).

The TGST, imposed on goods and services used by tourists, was increased from 8 percent to 12 percent on 1 November 2014. TGST is also imposed on Maldivians using domestic air travel services.

The amendment bill to exempt Maldivians from this tax, submitted to the parliament on behalf of the government by Hoarafushi MP Mohamed Ismail, was passed at today’s parliament sitting with 72 votes in favour.
