Maldives population exceeds 340,000

The National Bureau of Statistics has revealed that the current population of the Maldives is 341,256.

The preliminary results of the census conducted in September 2014 show that 399,939 people live in the Maldives in total, out of which 341,256 are Maldivians.

The population of the Maldives was 298,968 in 2006.

The current sex ratio is 100 women to 103 men.

The results show that the population of capital Male’ is 153,379, out of which 133,019 are Maldivians. Out of the total population, 39 percent live in Male’. Compared with 2006, the population of Male’ increased by 2.93 percent, with the highest population increase in Hulhumale’.

The population of the islands excluding Male’ is 246,560, out of which 208,237 people are Maldivians. Compared with 2006, the population of the islands excluding Male’ increased by 0.76 percent. The highest population increases were seen in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, Alifu Alifu Atoll, and Kaafu Atoll. The sex ratio in the islands excluding Male’ is 100 women to 106 men.

Out of the total population, 57 percent live in islands excluding Male’, and 3.35 percent live in resorts.

This is the first time foreigners were included in the census. The preliminary results show that the number of foreigners living in the Maldives is 58,683.
