President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that joining China’s Silk Route initiative would not interfere with the sovereignty of the Maldives.
The President made this remark in his speech at the official function held to mark this year’s Republic Day, at Dharubaaruge this morning.
“Joining the Silk Route would not interfere with the sovereignty of the Maldives. It would not harm the country’s independence or its Islamic character in anyway,” said President Yameen.
He highlighted that China is presently the largest as well as the fastest-growing economy, and said that the Maldivian government was happy to accept the opportunity to join the Silk Route.
The President further said that the efforts are ongoing by the government to ensure that the Maldivian nation continues along the path of Islamic development, and that this includes a complete revision of the school curriculum, which would facilitate revolutionary changes next year.
