Parliament accepts bill on building under strata system

The parliament has accepted the bill on building under strata system, with the votes of 31 out of 32 members present at today’s session.

The decision was made to send the bill, presented by former government through Hithadhoo Medhu MP Mohamed Rasheed, to National Development Committee for assessment as required by parliament regulations.

The purpose of the bill is to facilitate ownership of different flats in one building by several individuals, prompted by the lack of land space in the country. Owners can live, rent out and use the flats owned by them as they wish.

The bill describes how to register spaces under strata system, responsibilities of the owners of buildings under strata system, the rights of the people who register spaces under strata system, and the creation of a management corporation to oversee these operations.
