The government has signed an agreement with Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC) regarding maintenance of the drains on the roads of Male’, as part of the efforts to find a permanent solution for the problem of flooding caused by rain.
The agreement in this regard was signed at a ceremony at the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure today, by Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Managing Director of MRDC Ibrahim Nazeem.
The agreement, signed under Housing Ministry’s Repair and Maintenance Project of Male’ Roads, will see the cleaning of the worst-affected drains first, followed by the remaining drains; as well as the repair and cleaning of the water pipes in Male’.
Speaking to reporters at the ceremony, Dr Muizzu said that these efforts would continue until the problem of flooding is solved permanently.
He said that the project would be funded by the ministry, and the total budget for this project has not yet been decided.
“This agreement is one step towards solving the problem of flooding, under which the drains of the worst-affected roads will be cleaned. Several other efforts have been planned as well, including projects related to drainage,” said Dr Muizzu.
Dr Muizzu said earlier that the government would establish a redevelopment plan and reconstruct the roads of Male’.
