Ruling Party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has said that the purpose of the report by Auditor General Niyaz Ibrahim regarding Minister of Tourism and Vice President of PPM Ahmed Adeeb, was to defame the government.
In a statement issued yesterday, PPM claimed that the Audit Report was a ‘political’ report.
The Audit Report in question was issued after President Abdulla Yameen ratified an Amendment Bill to the Audit Act yesterday, which stated that the President should nominate an individual for the post of Auditor General and send the name to the parliament for approval, within thirty days from the day the bill is ratified.
The Special Audit Report issued by the Auditor General’s Office yesterday stated that efforts were made to confer undue advantage to a particular group, in a currency exchange transaction wherein Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) purchased $5 million for Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).
It also stated that a $1 million loan was issued via MMPRC to a company in which Adeeb’s family has stake, and that documents exist to support that this transaction was encouraged by Adeeb.
