Fariyash Ahmed, one of the two prisoners who escaped from Maafushi prison on Friday night, has been arrested.
This has been confirmed by the police.
“We have arrested one of the escaped prisoners, and efforts are ongoing to find the other one,” the police spokesperson said.
Police have not given any further details.
Sun Online has come to know that Fariyash was arrested in Male’.
Ibrahim Shahum and Fariyash were serving 25-year sentences after being convicted of terrorism and murder respectively, when they escaped from Maafushi prison through an air vent on Friday night.
As part of their search operation, police started monitoring ferry terminals and searching vehicles yesterday. The police in collaboration with Maldives Correctional Service have searched Maafushi, Guraidhoo, Gulhi, and Himmafushi; and several locations in Male’, including residential buildings under court warrants. Several boats have also been searched with the assistance of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
