Dhoni that was travelling from HDh. Vaikaradhoo to Kulhudhuffushi with five people and a 6-year-old child has sunk today.
Mohamed Zuhair, speaking to Sun from Kulhudhuffushi has said that the 20 feet dhoni had sunk between Keylakunu and Kulhudhuffushi. He added that the passengers and the dhoni have been brought to safety now.
“The dhoni was about 20 feet long, equipped with an outboard engine and even a sail. When the dhoni sank, there were five adults and a child on board. A launch travelling in the area picked up the child. We sent a dhoni when the launch called us in,” Zuhair said.
He also said that this was caused by a wave that had cashed into the front end of the dhoni, flooding it, which led to loss of control.
The people on the dhoni as well as some of their cargo have now been brought to Kulhudhuffushi. The dhoni was evacuated with help of the buoys that are used at the front of the dhoni to prevent it from crashing it into the pier. The passengers were brought to Kulhudhuffushi on a dhoni named Royal.
