US expresses concern over attacks and threats in Maldives

The United States has expressed concern over the recent attacks on media and political offices in Male’ as well as continuing threats to media personnel.

In a statement issued today, the US Embassy in Colombo said that peaceful freedom of expression is a fundamental democratic right, and strongly condemned the recent acts.

The Embassy noted the prompt Maldivian Police Service action to launch an investigation, and urged the authorities to bring to justice the perpetrators, and called for an end to all intimidation and violence.
