JP: Ready for discussions with government

Jumhooree Party (JP) has said that it is prepared to engage in dialogue with the government on any topic, if doing so would benefit the people.

Spokesperson for JP and former Minister of State for Fisheries Ali Solih told Sun Online, “The president mentioned yesterday that he would like to hold discussions with JP. We would welcome discussions. JP would always welcome efforts that would benefit the people.”

He said that he does not believe that JP is no longer part of the government coalition.

“We don’t believe that JP ever left the coalition, because until today, we have not been informed by the government or anyone else representing the coalition, that the coalition has been terminated. JP is ready for discussions,” said Solih.

He added that the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Bill, passed by the parliament yesterday, includes several clauses with which JP does not agree, but the party nonetheless voted in favour of passing the bill at the parliament because the establishment of Special Economic Zones would, ultimately, benefit the people of the Maldives.

President Yameen said while speaking at a press briefing yesterday, that the government would like to engage in dialogue and work with JP.
