President’s Office has today opened applications for two Elections Commission seats. Terms of two existing members - Mohamed Manik and Mohamed Farooq - are set to expire in November this year.
The five-member Elections Commission currently has three members in office. Two seats became vacant when the Supreme Court, in a ruling issued in March 2014, declared the commission’s president Fuad Thaufeeg and vice president Ahmed Fayaz disqualified from their posts.
President Abdulla Yameen has nominated four individuals; Ahmed Sulaiman, Mohamed Shakeel, Fathimath Muna, and Mohamed Zahid, for the two vacant posts. The nominations were forwarded for parliament approval in early July.
