Registration in island stations not necessary for JSC lawyer election, rules Supreme Court

In the election to appoint a member representing lawyers to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), voters who wish to cast their votes to stations outside the capital Male’ do not have to register at their stations to vote, the Supreme Court ruled today.

This was declared in a ruling by the Supreme Court which annulled Article 11 (a) of an election procedure published by the Attorney General’s Office. The article which required a minimum of 5 lawyers to have registered for an island to receive a ballot box.

The Supreme Court ruling also annulled the Attorney General’s Office announcement, issued on 3 August, calling for voters who wish to vote in the island’s to register with the office before 12 August.

The Attorney General's Office last week published a list of lawyers eligible to vote in the election, which is scheduled for 21 August.
