Islamic Minister: MVR 10 million spent on renovation of mosques

Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has said that the government has spent MVR 10 million this year to renovate mosques around the country.

Dr Shaheem made the statement in parliament today while attending a question session requested by Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam to clarify the projects undertaken by the Ministry in Addu City.

Responding to questions in parliament, the Islamic Minister said that Addu City currently has the most number of mosques in the country and that a sum of MVR 1 million, the largest lump-sum budget granted for renovation of mosques so far, was allocated in July for the renovation of 65 mosques in Addu City.

He also told the parliament today that the government plans to establish a monumental mosque, similar to the Islamic Centre in Male’, in Addu City, and that plans for the project have been discussed with the city council. A plot of land has already been allocated for the project, which is estimated to cost MVR 5 million, the Islamic Minister said today.
