The government utility company for the atolls, Fenaka Corporation Limited has announced that a total of 77 electric generators will arrive in the Maldives to be placed in the islands without 24-hour electricity service.
Mohamed Nimal, Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation told Sun Online that paperwork for the import of the generators have now been finalized.
“We have received all shipment details. The first shipment will arrive around 18th or 19th this month. The second shipment will come on 22nd and the third shipment on 24th of this month,” said Nimal.
The company is scheduled to begin the transport of the generators to the islands on 10 September.
“The problems will not be solved by replacing the generators. Cables in some islands have deteriorated and they cannot carry the voltage. They have to be replaced along with the distribution boxes,” said the Managing Director of Fenaka.
Fenaka Corporation in March this year signed contracts with three companies to establish 24-hour electricity services in 78 islands by establishing electric generators with 116 kilowatt to 2 megawatt capacity.
