Cabinet pledges MVR 500,000 to Help Gaza fund

The Cabinet has decided to donate MVR 500,000 to the Help Gaza fund, an initiative organized by local broadcasters and media outlets to raise funds for the Muslims suffering under Israeli aggression in Gaza.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed personally pledged one month's salary to the fund on Saturday. The President is entitled to a monthly salary of MVR 100,000 although he collects half the sum. Vice President Dr Jameel receives a salary of MVR 75,000.

Over MVR 20 million was gathered for the Help Gaza fund through the Help Gaza Telethon, which ran from 2:30 p.m. on Friday, 8 August until 3:00 a.m. last night.

A number of political parties, public and private companies, government offices and organizations have also urged each individual employees to donate one-day's sum of their salaries.
