Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) have decided to field candidates for the Addu City Council by-election for Feydhoo constituency, scheduled for 20 September.
PPM has opened applications for the party ticket today, and the opening is set to close on Thursday, 7 August. MDP has said that 5 members have applied for the party ticket, and that a primary will be held on Friday.
The by-election was announced after councillor representing Feydhoo constituency Abdulla Aswan passed away on 7 July after suffering from a heart attack.
MDP members have held all 6 seats of the Addu City Council after winning the Local Council Election in January.
Noonu Velidhoo island council’s by-election will also be held alongside the Addu City Council election on 20 September. Elections Commission's call for applications for the two seats is set to expire on 17 August.
