PPM parliamentary group members agree to 10 percent salary reduction

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) member, Feydhoo MP Ibrahim Didi has said that all PPM parliamentary group members are in agreement that their salaries as Members of Parliament (MPs) should be reduced.

He told Sun Online today that since President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom announced shortly after being elected as president that he would only accept part of his salary, PPM parliamentary group members, including its leader Mohamed Nihan Hussain Manik, have agreed that they should follow suit.

He added that the group has agreed to reduce their salaries by 10 percent, but noted that this has not yet been finalised, and will be finalised after discussion.

MPs receive MVR 82,500 as salary and allowances. This consists of MVR 42,500 as basic salary, MVR 20,000 as living allowance, and MVR 20,000 as committee allowance.

Presently, there are 43 MPs representing PPM in the parliament. Ten percent of their basic salary and living allowances, which is MVR 62,500, is MVR 6,250. This reduction would save MVR 268,750 per month and MVR 3.2 million per year from the State budget.
