Committee to summon Home Minister regarding case filed by prisoner

The Parliament Committee on National Security has decided to summon Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer for questioning regarding a case filed to the parliament by a prisoner, which accuses authorities of having failed to establish regulations as required by the Prisons and Parole Act.

The decision to summon the Home Minister was passed by the committee at a meeting yesterday. All MPs present at the meeting including Vilingili MP Saudh Hussain, Thimarafushi MP Mohamed Musthafa, Gemanafushi MP Jameel Usman, and Velidhoo MP Umar Hussain, voted in favour.

The committee also passed to summon Commissioner of Prisons of Maldives Police Service Moosa Azim for questioning regarding this matter.

The Prisons and Parole Act, enforced some seven months ago, states that 24 regulations must be established and published within three months of the enforcement of this law.

The case by the inmate at Kaafu Maafushi Prison was sent to the parliament in a letter.
