The number of criminal cases reported to the police during the first two weeks of Ramadan this year has declined by 38 percent compared to Ramadan last year, Maldives Police Service (MPS) has said.
MPS said in a statement today that they received 413 criminal cases during the first two weeks of Ramadan this year, compared to 622 cases in the same period of 2013.
Police received 104 thefts and mugging cases this year, compared to 216 cases in the first two weeks of Ramadan last year. The number of assaults also decreased from 25 to 19 this year.
Police received 55 drug cases during the first two weeks of Ramadan this year, compared to 92 cases during the same period in 2013.
Reports of daytime eating in public during Ramadan also declined to 5 cases filed within the first two weeks this year, compared to 31 cases during the same period last year.
However, traffic violations have increased this Ramadan, with 87 violations during the first two weeks compared to 87 violations during the first two weeks of Ramadan last year.
