President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has nominated four individuals for the two vacant posts at the Elections Commission, and sent the names to the parliament for approval.
The four individuals are Ahmed Sulaiman, Mohamed Shakeel, Fathimath Muna, and Mohamed Zahid.
Two seats became vacant at the Elections Commission when the Supreme Court, in a ruling issued in March 2014, declared the commission’s president Fuad Thaufeeg and vice president Ahmed Fayaz disqualified from their posts.
This ruling came after the court investigated Fuad and Fayaz for disrespecting the court, by criticising its verdicts.
The President’s Office said earlier that the four nominations sent to the parliament were chosen from a total of 18 applicants, and that a public announcement was made to call for applications - as required by the Elections Commission Act.
The office said that as per the Elections Commission Act, the names of all 18 applicants have also been sent to the parliament.
