Former President Nasheed has accused members of the Police of threatening to kill former Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Atheef by holding a knife to his neck minutes before Nasheed resigned.
Speaking to the media after his trip to the US, Nasheed said that a group of policemen attempted to kill Atheef and that they had ‘destroyed’ the Police institution.
“A group of policemen attempted to kill former Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Atheef. They put a knife to his neck, they destroyed almost the entire Police office,” Nasheed said.
He alleged that several similar incidents took place at the Police institution on 7 February.
Police Media Coordinator Ismail Haneef condemned these claims by Nasheed, and said that these are irresponsible statements made by the former President.
“Police Integrity Commission is also investigating the events of the day the government changed. No information of the incident which Nasheed is talking about [attempt to kill DCP Atheef] has been submitted to the Police or anywhere else that we know of,” Haneef said.
