Prepared to discuss coalition issue with PPM: Gasim

Maamigili MP, Leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) Gasim Ibrahim has said that he is prepared to discuss the government coalition issue with ruling party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

Gasim made this remark while speaking at a press conference at Maafannu Kunooz today.

When asked if JP might initiate the talks, he said that there would be no progress unless “the person with power gives in”.

He said that despite PPM's announcement, JP still does not believe that the coalition has been dissolved.

He noted that the coalition agreement states that when in disagreement, the parties shall engage in dialogue to find solutions; but to this day, PPM had not held any discussions to resolve the issue.

Referring to JP parliamentary group members Nolhivaram MP Hussain Areef and Milandhoo MP Hassan Mufeed, and Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed joining PPM yesterday, Gasim said, “I have heard that they were told by the government that developmental projects for their constituencies will not proceed. That is, Milandhoo MP has said that the sewerage project in his island will not be implemented.”

Gasim said that he was also told by the minister who defected to PPM that it was impossible to move forward without switching party.

“He asked me for advice on how to proceed. I told him to do what he thinks is best,” said Gasim.
