Man sentenced to 15 years for possession of drugs

Criminal Court has sentenced Hamza Ali of G. Beach Nest to 15 years in prison and a MVR 25,000 fine for possession of drugs.

Police discovered drugs from Hamza’s room and arrested him with another individual from the scene on the night of 16 November 2011.

Criminal Court said in its sentence that 5.6737 grams of the substance found inside Hamza’s room tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabinol.

Hamza had said during trial that the drugs belong to a man named Asim Hussain from Hulhudhoo, Addu City. However, the court said that Hamza’s behavior during the investigation speaks contrary to his claim that the substance belongs to Asim Hussain and that Hamza has to bear the legal consequences due to the location the drugs were discovered.

The Criminal Court ruling also requires Hamza to pay the complete sum of the fine to the court within a period of one month from the pronouncement of the sentence.
