The southern side of Noonu Velidhoo has been experiencing tidal waves since this afternoon, the island’s council has said.
Vice President of Velidhoo Council Mohamed Alifulhu told Sun Online today that several trees have been knocked down by big waves coming into the island since 2:00 p.m.
He said that while no one has been injured and no damage has been caused to private property, the floods are causing serious difficulties for the people of the island.
Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) said that tidal waves are experienced in different areas of the country during the onset of the rainy southwest monsoon every year, and the waves in some areas may persist for another three days.
