Doctors were forced to amputate the leg of Raa Rasgetheemu Council President Ali Najeeb following a freak accident today.
Najib was brought to Male’ for treatment in the evening after his leg was crushed between a boat and the harbour landing around 7:00 .m. today, moments before he was about to head out for fishing.
The 47-year-old councillor’s right leg was amputated at the knee tonight with the consent of his family at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male’.
CEO of IGMH Dr Mohamed Habeeb told Sun Online that the decision to amputate the leg was made due to the extensive damage to nerve and veins after due consultation with neurologists and orthodontologists.
“The tissues were also damaged. The nerves were severed. There was no way to save the leg. We decided to amputate it with the consent of the family,” Habeeb said.
Naheeb’s family told Sun Online that Najeeb is undergoing an post-amputation operation, which is likely to take about 9 hours. Najeeb’s brother Ahmed Wajeeh said that his brother’s right leg was heavily damaged and that the family consents if amputation was the only choice to save his brother’s life.
“Doctors proved to us that my brother’s leg was already dead. The hospital also told us about complications that might arise if we try to move him to Sri Lanka in his condition. There is nothing that can be done. We have told them we have no objections to amputating the leg,” Wajeeh said.
