Efforts are under way by Ministry of Health and Gender to re-employ midwives, to facilitate the provision of services required by pregnant women in the islands.
Health Ministry said in a statement that 90 people applied after it opened application for midwives, and efforts are ongoing to finalise civil service employment for 47 of those applicants.
The ministry said that it selected people who hold the relevant certificate and have experience as midwives.
The ministry is also working on re-defining the responsibilities of midwives.
“Generally, they will work with public health issues related to pregnancies, at Atoll Hospitals and Health Units run by Health Centres,” read the statement.
The ministry said that efforts are also ongoing to employ applicants aged between 55 and 65, as midwives.
