Driver fined for breaking through police cordon

A pickup truck driver has been fined MVR 3,000 for breaking through a police cordon during a protest.

Mohamed Saleem was convicted in Criminal Court today of breaking through the police cordon at the intersection of Alikilegefaanu Magu and Lily Magu on 1 March 2012 during a protest by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) against the delivery of the inauguration speech by former President Dr Mohamed Waheed at the parliament.

The court said in its verdict that testimonies given by police officers showed that Saleem entered the cordoned area in his pick-up truck, disobeyed orders, and obstructed the police.

He was ordered to pay the fine in full to the court within one month.
