The government has signed an agreement with Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC) regarding the construction of the nine biggest roads in Fonadhoo in Laamu Atoll.
Speaking at a ceremony at Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure to sign the agreement today, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that the cost of the project, which is funded by the State, is MVR 47 million.
He informed that as per the agreement the project must be completed within 18 months.
“This project will encourage development in Fonadhoo. Construction of good quality roads will facilitate implementation of other projects at a fast speed,” he said.
The government has also decided to construct Link Road, which connects four islands in Laamu Atoll. The project to develop the 15-km road to modern standards is funded by free aid from the government of China. Dr Muizzu said that efforts are ongoing by China to find Chinese contractors for this project, and that the contractors are scheduled to arrive in the Maldives before the end of the month.
