The number of assault cases has decreased by 7 percent, while drug-related crimes have increased by 14 percent in the Maldives during the first four months of 2014.
Statistics published on the website of Maldives Police Service show that the number of crimes reported to police over the first four months of 2014 increased by 3 percent compared with the corresponding period of 2013. The number of crimes reported to police during the first four months of 2014 and first four months of 2013 were 6,155 and 5,978 respectively.
The number of assault cases for January 2014 was 100, while it was 107 for February, 108 for March, and 107 for April. The total of 422 assault cases reported over the first four months of 2014 is 7 percent less when compared with the corresponding period of 2013, when 454 assault cases were reported.
The number of drug-related crimes recorded during the first four months of 2014 was 1,402, while it was 1,211 during the first four months of 2013, resulting in a 14 percent increase.
