Most senior legal official at PG Office must ensure the office remains operational: AG

Attorney General (AG) Ahmed Anil has said that in the absence of a Prosecutor General (PG) and a Deputy Prosecutor General, it is the responsibility of the most senior legal official at the Prosecutor General’s Office to ensure that the office remains operational.

The Attorney General said in a six-page letter sent to the President today, that previous Supreme Court rulings and orders do not allow the PG Office coming to a standstill in the event that the post of Prosecutor General becomes vacant.

Deputy Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem resigned yesterday, and no attorneys of the PG Office have attended court proceedings since then.

Also, Assistant Prosecutor General Ahmed Hameed Fahmy sent a letter yesterday to all courts with criminal jurisdiction, stating that PG Office attorneys no longer have the authority to attend court proceedings on behalf of the State.

Hameed is presently the most senior legal official at Prosecutor General’s Office.
