President’s Office has called for applications for the Prosecutor General vacancy for a third time.
The announcement was published by the President’s Office in the government gazette today. Application form and declaration can be downloaded from the President’s Office website, said the office. Deadline for the application is set for 3:00 p.m. on 15 May 2014.
Five candidates applied for the position during the second call. President’s Office Spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz told Sun Online earlier today that five applications were too few to make a selection.
The five candidates include; Criminal Court Judge Muhuthaz Muhusin, former Tourism Minister Mariyam Zulfa, former Deputy Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem, State Prosecutor at the Prosecutor General’s Office Aishath Fazna Ahmed and former police attorney Mohamed Shah.
The Prosecutor General’s Act states that a new person must be appointed to the Prosecutor General post within 30 days from vacancy. However, President's last nomination, prominent lawyer Maumoon Hameed, was rejected by parliament on 14 April.
Deputy Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem took over the responsibilities of the Prosecutor General after PG Ahmed Muizzu resigned on 25 November last year. Shameem resigned around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, leaving both the PG and DPG positions vacant and bringing all criminal proceedings to a standstill.
