President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has decided to call for new applications for the Prosecutor General appointment.
President’s Office Spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz told Sun Online today that the President believes that the number of current applications are too few. It does not give the President an adequate number of choices, the Spokesperson said.
Five candidates applied for the PG post when the President’s Office called for applications for a second time on 24 April. The candidates include; Criminal Court Judge Muhuthaz Muhusin, former Tourism Minister Mariyam Zulfa, former Deputy Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem, State Prosecutor at the Prosecutor General’s Office Aishath Fazna Ahmed and former police attorney Mohamed Shah.
President's last nomination, prominent lawyer Maumoon Hameed, was rejected by the parliament on 14 April. Deputy Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem resigned on Monday, bringing all criminal proceedings to a standstill.
