The government will take action against any media outlet that promotes hatred and try to defame groups and individuals, President’s Office has cautioned today.
In a statement published on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, President’s Office Spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz said the government will also make every effort to protect journalists and ensure freedom the media.
The President’s Office noted that all stakeholders agree that one key regulatory body must hold authority for effective regulation, and called on media regulatory bodies to improve their principles and procedures.
The President’s Office also reiterated its commitment to non-discrimination amongst media outlets and said that the office is working to establish the stipulated requirements of the Right to Information, as it comes into effect in July this year. The President’s Office also assured that all government offices will be open for journalists to obtain information without discrimination.
“The government welcomes the broad dissemination of information and news in a responsible manner, to the extent to which laws pertaining to the media permit. This government, upon its inauguration, recalled indictments against some media outlets. This proves the government’s compassion for the media,” said the President’s Office Spokesperson in his statement today.
