Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed has said that the introduction of Halal certificates for local food products will allow local businesses to enter new markets and facilitate expansion of exports.
The minister said this while speaking at a ceremony held at Ministry of Islamic Affairs today, to present the first Halal certificates to three companies.
He said that the local fisheries industry suffered when, despite the ecological fisheries practised in the Maldives, foreign companies introduced a tax on Maldivian fish exports; and that fish exporters can penetrate new markets if their products contain the Halal logo.
Minister Ameen said that more local food products will have Halal logo in the future, and efforts are also ongoing to create a new logo for products that are 100 percent made in Maldives.
