Efforts are under way to protect the eroded area in Haa Alifu Dhidhdhoo by placing a jumbo bag barrier.
Dhidhdhoo Council President Ibrahim Shinan told Sun Online that 100 of these bag structures will be placed on the south western side of the island under this project, which began yesterday.
“This project was initiated by the council. Officials of companies and institutions, as well as the people of the island are providing great support,” said Shinan.
He said that the project should be completed sometime today.
The problem of erosion is a serious challenge for Dhidhdhoo. According to the island council, an area of about 300 feet has disappeared since 2010.
Sun Online reporters who visited Dhidhdhoo observed that several trees had fallen to the sea due to erosion. The water has also come close to residential areas in the island.
