Several islands face water shortage

National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) has said that water has been supplied to several islands after they reported facing water shortage.

NDMC said that since December 2013, 76 islands have requested for water, out of which it has been provided to 59.

Distribution of water is conducted in groups and rounds. In the last phase, water was provided to ten islands, which were Haa Alifu Uligamu, Baa Kihaadhoo, Raa Fainu, Baa Dharavandhoo, Haa Alifu Ihavandhoo, Thaa Dhiyamigili, Alifu Alifu Maalhos, Haa Alifu Maarandhoo, Kaafu Gaafaru, and Alifu Alifu Himandhoo.

NDMC has now started a new round, in which water will be supplied to Meemu Veyvah, Baa Kendhoo, Baa Kudarikilu, Baa Fulhadhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Kunburudhoo, Raa Rasgetheem, Raa Ungoofaaru, Raa Maakurathu, and Meemu Naalaafushi.

NDMC said that more islands have requested for water and efforts are ongoing to fulfil those requests.

A total of 2,286 tons of water have been supplied to islands since December 2013.

The state spends large sums of money providing water to islands in the dry season every year.
