Parliament approves Dr Azeema as central bank Governor

Parliament has today approved Dr Azeema Adam as the new Governor of the central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

Dr Azeema joined MMA in May 1991, and is presently the Assistant Governor and Chief Economist, Monetary Policy, Research and Statistics at MMA. She holds a PhD in Economics and a Master’s Degree in International Development and Finance.

The central bank's head position was left vacant when Dr Fazeel Najeeb resigned after citing personal reasons on 31 December last year.

President Abdulla Yameen earlier proposed Associate Director at Bank of Maldives (BML) Ibthisham Ahmed Saeed to the Governor position, but later recalled the nomination.
