Maldives has tonight observed the international Earth Hour from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time.
Authorities, along with the Earth Hour Maldives initiative have urged individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and to reduce consumption of electricity during the one hour window.
Earth Hour is a global movement kicked off in Sydney, Australia in 2007 by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The movement is observed annually on the last Saturday of March and is currently observed in over 7000 cities in 154 countries world-wide.
