President Yameen Abdul Gayoom has inaugurated a 17.5-hectare land reclamation project in Dhaalu Meedhoo.
The size of the island of Meedhoo, which has a population of 1,300, is 12 hectares, and this project to extend it by 17.5 hectares has been awarded to Dutch company Boskalis.
The contract states that the reclamation should be completed within ten days, while all work related to this project should be completed within one month.
The project is funded by the government.
President of Meedhoo Council Ahmed Aslam said that the island has run out of space, and land has not been issued for housing purposes for the past 23 years.
He said that the lack of land is a serious setback for Meedhoo’s development, and that 250 land plots will be issued for housing on the new 17.5 hectares.
The ceremony to inaugurate this project was attended by Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed and several senior officials of the government.
