Elections Commission (EC) has said that 18 independent candidates have not signed the voters’ lists for the upcoming parliamentary election. Deadline for signing the lists closed at noon today.
"All political parties (candidates) have signed the voters’ lists by the deadline at 12:00 p.m. today. Political parties had signed all the required lists, but 18 independent candidates from 13 constituencies have not signed their lists,” Mohamed Shakeel, Elections Commission’s Bureau Director and Media Official told Sun today.
Elections Commission is required by a Supreme Court guideline to have all candidates sign their relevant voters' lists before proceeding with polls.
Parties will field 188 candidates alongside 114 independents, who will compete for a total of 85 seats in the upcoming parliamentary election.
