Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer has ordered the Maldives Police Service to assemble a “dog squad” to uncover drugs being imported into the country.
“We received the order today and we’ve started work. We cannot estimate when it will be completed,” said a police media official today.
Dogs were utilized to sniff out drugs in the Maldives during former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration. More recently, former president Dr Waheed’s established quarters to house specially trained dogs at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport.
Transport Minister Ameen Ibrahim recently warned that security at the airports and seaports need to be tightened to prevent drugs from entering the country.
