MDP condemns transfusion of HIV positive blood to pregnant woman

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has, in a statement issued today, condemned the transfusion of HIV positive blood to a pregnant woman by Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

MDP said that it is both frightening and of utmost concern, that senior officials in the health sector at a press conference blamed hospital staff for this blunder instead of taking responsibility themselves.

The party called on relevant authorities to immediately investigate the matter, and said that this is an incident indicative of the poor state of the health sector in the Maldives, and also one which shows the government’s negligence and carelessness towards the health sector.

MDP said that it would be impossible to restore confidence in the health sector for years to come.
