High Court backs Criminal Court rulings in case against Deputy Speaker Nazim

High Court has backed the Criminal Court rulings in the case against Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim.

Nazim had been charged by the State with deception on four counts.

The first charge against Nazim involves the use of Namira Engineering employees to propose estimates using fake names of non-existing companies and winning the bids for 15,000 national flags, following the call for bids by then Ministry of Atolls.

The second charge involves the use of Namira Engineering employees to propose estimates using the name of another company and winning the bids for the 15,000 national flags.

The third charge involves the use of Neza Enterprises employees to propose estimates using the names of three companies owned by Nazim for sound systems for island mosques, prior to the call for bids by Ministry of Atolls.

The fourth charge involves the use of Namira Engineering employees to propose bids under the names of different companies, without their knowledge, for the purchase of 220 harbour lights called for by Ministry of Atolls.

High Court said in separate rulings for the four counts today that it was apparent from the statements provided by witnesses during the investigation of this case, that they were the ones who prepared the bid documents.

High Court said that the witnesses are responsible for creating the basis of this crime, and that no evidence was provided to the court indicate that Nazim gave permission to sign the bid documents.

High Court said that the most likely suspects in this deception case are the individuals involved in the preparation of the bid documents.

The lawyers involved in this case are Adam Asif and Aminath Shizleena.
