Re-registration necessary for parliamentary election

Elections Commission has revealed that it is mandatory for voters to re-register with the commission, if they wish to vote away from their permanent addresses for the parliamentary elections.

Director General of Elections Commission’s Bureau Mohamed Shakeel said that registrations for the Local Council Election have been reset and that voters must re-register for the 22 March election.

“The commission has not called for registration for [voters wishing to vote in] places other than their permanent addresses. We will open for registration and voters will have to register in order to vote,” Shakeel said.

Primaries of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is still ongoing. However, the party has not announced a date for the next wave of primaries.

Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has announced for primaries to be held on Friday. The party, with coalition partners Jumhoory Party (JP) and the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), will field candidates through the coalition.
