A dhoni carrying 12 people from Male’ to Faafu Filitheyo Resort has sunk early morning on Friday.
Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) said that the incident was reported at 4:48 a.m., following which MNDF Male’ Area Coast Guard Squadron went to the scene and rescued all passengers on board.
The dhoni that sank is a supply boat named “3 A 28”.
MNDF said that the dhoni sank about 15 miles off east of Alifu Dhaalu Dhigurah. There were eight men, two women and two children on board at the time of the incident.
MNDF said that when the dhoni began sinking, all passengers climbed onto a dinghy that had been on the dhoni.
MNDF further informed that the dhoni started sinking when it collided with another vessel, which escaped.
All 11 passengers excluding the captain are now traveling to Male’ on Coast Guard Squadron Harbour Craft 113, said MNDF. The captain stayed behind with police at the area of the accident.
MNDF said that no one was hurt in the incident.
The accident is under investigation by the police.
