The ruling coalition has won majority seats in the Local Council Election held on 18 January, according to the preliminary results announced by the Elections Commission.
In the Atoll Council Elections, the government coalition won 73 seats or 55 percent - made up of 44 seats by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), 11 seats by Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), 15 seats by Jumhooree Party (JP), and 3 seats by Adhaalath Party) - while opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won 55 seats or 41 percent.
Three Atoll Council seats were also won by independent candidates.
In the Island Council Elections, the government coalition won 423 seats or 45 percent – made up of 227 seats by PPM, 44 seats by MDA, 109 seats by JP, and 42 seats by Adhaalath Party - while opposition MDP won 385 seats or 41 percent and independent candidates won 130 seats or 13.85 percent.
Majority in City Councils was won by opposition MDP, with all 6 seats in Addu City Council, and 8 out of 11 seats in Male’ City Council. The remaining 3 seats in Male’ City Council was won by the government coalition.
The government coalition won majority in 86 Island Councils, while MDP won majority in 74 Island Councils, and independent candidates won majority in 15 Island Councils.
In Haa Alifu Atoll Council, 5 seats were won by the government coalition and MDP each, while no seats were won by independent candidates.
In Haa Alifu Island Councils, the government coalition won majority with 32 seats while independent candidates won 19 seats.
In Haa Dhaalu Atoll Council, the government coalition won 37 seats, while MDP won 28 seats and independent candidates won 2 seats.
In Haa Dhaalu Island Councils, the government coalition won 6 seats while MDP won 4 seats.
In Shaviyani Atoll Council, the government coalition won 5 seats, while MDP won 2 seats and an independent candidate won 1 seat.
In Shaviyani Island Councils, the government coalition won 34 seats, while MDP won 29 seats and independent candidates 7 seats.
In Noonu Atoll Council, the government coalition won 4 seats, while MDP won 2 seats and no seats were won by any independent candidates.
In Noonu Island Councils, MDP won majority with 36 seats, while the government coalition won 29 seats and no seats were won by any independent candidates.
In Raa Atoll Council, the government coalition won 6 seats, while MDP won 4 seats and no seats were won by any independent candidates.
In Raa Island Councils, the government coalition won 44 seats, while MDP won 25 seats and independent candidates 7 seats.
In Baa Atoll Council, MDP won majority with 4 seats, while the government coalition won 2 seats and no seats were won by independent candidates.
In Baa Island Councils, MDP again won majority with 37 seats, while the government coalition won 6 seats and independent candidates 12 seats.
In Laviyani Atoll Council, the government coalition won majority with 4 seats while MDP won 2 seats.
In Laviyani Island Councils, the government coalition and MDP won 10 seats each, and independent candidates won 4 seats.
In Kaafu Atoll Council, the government coalition won 4 seats while MDP won 1 seat and no seats were won by independent candidates.
In Kaafu Island Councils, the government coalition won 29 seats, while MDP won 13 seats and independent candidates 2 seats.
In Alifu Alifu Atoll Council, all seats were won by MDP.
In Alifu Alifu Island Councils, MDP won 23 seats, while the government coalition won 14 seats and an independent candidate 1 seat.
In Alifu Dhaalu Atoll Council, the government coalition won 4 seats while MDP won 2 seats.

The election in Vilingili for Gaafu Alifu Atoll Council has not yet been held. All seats in Gemanafushi and Dhaandhoo elections were won by MDP.
